He received his medical training at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
He was granted the Best Resident Award and ranked first in his postgraduate examination in 1984 while studying ophthalmology at AIIMS’ Rajendra Prasad Centre (1982-1984).
After completing his senior residency (1985-1987), he returned to his old mater for the next decade, first as an assistant professor (1988-91) and then as an associate professor (1991-96).
Dr. Mahipal is a worldwide authority on cataract and refractive surgery, with over 94 articles in reputable journals and authorship of more than ten well-received books and manuals, including A Practical Guide to Phacoemulsification, one of the first books on the issue released in 1996.
